Internet domains in the .EU namespace will be available to the public by this Friday the 7th. And by this time, users are in eager anticipation of registering their very own domains, reserved especially for European businesses and individuals. The first wave of registration was reserved for trademark holders, wherein companies were given a sunrise period of registering their trademarked names early. Of course, it can be expected that with this system owners of similar or sound-alike trademarked names would clamor for the best names. The presence of domain squatters—or entities registering domain names and then later on re-selling ...

Service Level Agreements, or SLAs, are popular with companies outsourcing IT work. For instance, if a company does not have its own IT department, but would need IT-related services such as installation and maintenance of equipment and/or software, it can sign an SLA with an IT services provider. One issue with getting into SLAs, however, is expectations. SLAs are known to be prepared by technical personnel, hence the wordings and stipulations are usually in tech-speak. So if the company getting into contract with the IT firm does not have organic personnel or managers who understand technology, they are most likely ...

First, it was mobile provider Orange, that announced it was launching a landline service for business clients. Now, another large cellular provider has announced it is considering entry into the landline and broadband market. Vodafone prefers to resell broadband and voice services in bulk, though, rather than acquire a service provider for enduser needs. Offering landline and broadband services is seen as a smart move, with the increasing popularity of wireless Internet (WiFi) and Voice over Internet Protocol, among other technologies. First, these might pose a challenge to the dominance of the cellular industry. Then again, the increased uptake of ...

Microsoft is set to announce that it will be pushing back the release of Vista, the latest version of its Windows family of operating systems, from November 2006 to first quarter of 2007. The reason, according to company officials, is to let its engineers do further refinements with the security components, a laudable move, considering security loopholes prevalent in Vista’s predecessors. Investors aren’t all to happy, however, as the company’s stock fell 3% with the announcement. Also, companies are likely to hold off purchases of new desktop and laptop systems, in anticipation of Vista’s release at a later date. So ...

Market research firm Gartner has warned that sales of desktop computers are on the decline. Mobile computers—including laptops and other mobile alternatives—are on the rise! Desktop sales are expected to grow 1.9% in 2006 over the previous year. Laptop sales are, meanwhile, expected to grow 31.4%. A steady decline in sales in desktop-based computing platforms is seen henceforth. What does this mean for businesses? This is most likely brought about by the popularity of mobility in the workplace. In today’s business environment, many deals and transactions are done out-of-office. And with mobile connectivity options such as WiFi and other cellular-based networks, ...

What’s in a name? To many businesses, it’s everything. That’s especially when it’s what identifies you in this virtual world called the Internet. In December of 2005, the .EU domain namespace—for the European Union—was launched, with plans to open for public sale by April of 2006. The .EU domain registry gave companies a sunrise period to already register their trademarks. But with a lot of companies sharing the same name, this had been a problem. For instance, POLO is a registered trademark of Volkswagen (the mid-range sedan), Nestlé (the mint candy) and Ralph Lauren (the clothes line). Guess who snagged the ...

We introduced the concept of the Long Tail principle recently. In business parlance, it’s a relatively new idea coined by Wired Magazine to describe occurrences in click-and-mortar retail establishments. The idea was that the Internet has brought forth the power of the Long Tail, in that businesses that cater to niche audiences have found a faster way to reach their clientele (as opposed to businesses with a mass audience, which is more or less a hit-and-miss affair). However, individual niche products or services alone cannot make the Long Tail principle work its magic. They key is consolidation. The one who ...

British Telecom recently announced an upgrade for most of its residential and business broadband subscribers. The company is upgrading 5,300 of its local exchanges to support speeds theoretically reaching upwards of 8 Megabits per second, depending on the distance from the exchanges. This means about 78% of subscribers will be able to reach 4 Megabits per second, while 42% is likely to reach 8 Megabits per second up. Subscribers within close proximity to the exchanges, meanwhile will get a whopping 8 Megabits per second connection speed. This is welcome news to existing and startup companies alike, especially those that ...

E-Commerce startups and Internet-related businesses have a reason to be happy. Broadband uptake in the UK is on the rise, as reported by the Office of National Statistics. As of end-2005, 64% of all Internet connections in the UK are through broadband connections, or lines with speeds that exceed 100 kilobits per second (roughly twice dial-up speeds). Many internet providers nowadays offer connection speeds upwards of 1 Megabits per second, and even offer upgrades to 2Mbps for low or no cost to consumers. With the popularity of broadband, barriers to consumers’ enjoying e-commerce are being brought down, as the World Wide ...

If mobile handset manufacturers had their way, our next computer won’t be a PC, nor would it be a Mac. It could be that the next computer we get to purchase would be a mobile phone. At the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, companies are touting new systems that let data seamlessly be synchronized between computers and mobile devices over the Internet. More than simply syncing data, the devices can also read popular formats from office-applications such as Microsoft Word documents, Mirosoft Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations and more. Mobile devices and web applications are seen to replace traditional computers ...
