We are visual creatures, so it shouldn’t be so surprising if we find it easier to remember things given visual cues. The funny thing is that many of us, including me, still tend to rely purely on our memories to get us through the day.

If you think about it though, some of the most effective productivity tools that help make our days become more efficient are very simple and does nothing more than just remind us visually of the things that need to be done. Examples of such things are simple to do lists, pill organizers, tray organizers, and more. These things usually don’t really DO anything for us. The work still needs to be done by a living, breathing person after all. However, by their mere existence the day(s) somehow becomes a little less tough.

Reasons for this that I can think of include:

  • It frees up your mind for more important things – Instead of having to memorize lists or spend time trying to remember if you’ve taken your pill, all you need to do is glance at your list or your pill box and you’ll get the information you need at once. This frees you up to put your mental energies elsewhere.
  • It allows you to delegate work (sometimes) without too much hassle – This specifically pertains to tasks written down as lists. If you have a ready list in front of you, it’ll be easier to pass on the work to someone without having to spend time dictating things. This is truly handy during emergencies.
  • It gives you a sense of fulfillment – Having a visual reminder of the things you need to do also means having a visual reminder (virtual pat in the back) of the things you have accomplished during the day. It might be the most trivial of things, but every time you are reminded that you did something you are supposed to that day it will help put you in a more positive mood.
