We all know that Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) have been wreaking havoc in Africa and much has been done to stop it, but now, a new disease endemic to a lot of developing countries has made life worse for those living in the planet’s second largest continent. Sub-saharan Africa has been hit hard by a now worsening Tuberculosis epidemic. It has hit hard on the people with HIV and AIDS since the condition of immunodeficiency makes one less able to combat foreign invaders such as the very pathogens and bacteria that cause Tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis is not an uncommon disease. In fact, it is estimated that 20 percent of the world’s population have it but most would not manifest with the symptoms until they get very ill. According to health officials in Africa, half of those with TB are also suffering from HIV making the treatment even harder and more uphill. Treatment of TB requires four or more drugs and this is of course to be taken above the multitude of anti-retroviral drugs that are designed to suppress the virus responsible for AIDS.

TB can strike just about anywhere. The usual presentation involves the lungs wherein the patient goes coughing and spitting out blood for weeks before losing weight and appetite. It can also attach itself to gastrointestinal organs, bones, skin, the liver and even lymph nodes.

AIDS gets a lot of media mileage. But around the world, there are still a lot of people dying of TB (a curable disease, mind you) everyday.
