We all know it is better to give than receive. So, giving twice must be even better still.

If you’re unfamiliar with eco-friendly gifts, it’s a perfect time to get acquainted. Eco-friendly gifts – also called green gifts – are purchased from socially and environmentally-conscious retailers who stock products that in one way or another give something back to society.

That’s a big difference from companies who only have profits in mind when creating their products. Many of the hottest items being sold today have very little or no intrinsic value. In the case of some cheap toys mass produced in countries like China, they may not even be safe. And that’s even before you factor in damage to the environment and society from poor manufacturing and labor standards.

Eco-friendly gifts are different. Typically, the main motivation behind green products is sustainability.

Many green gifts are products composed of materials that may be all-natural or at the very least made with without harmful chemicals and other agents that can be unsafe for people or the environment. It could also be that the company uses recycled materials or utilizes energy-saving technology such as solar power.

Another approach involves the company working in a cooperative arrangement with workers in foreign countries. The workers produce a product – typically textiles and other similar items – and the company buys each unit at prices that aren’t exploitative. The company is working to protect the environment by giving the workers opportunities to earn fair wages so they have better land-use options.

Ethical Ocean eco shopping is one way you can give back this holiday season. The company has strict standards for any vendor that sells its wares on their site. Every product must be: good for people; good for animals; or good for the environment. Items available include everything from men’s and women’s fashions to gardening supplies, children’s products, electronics and food and drink stuffs.

And that’s just one example. As the green movement has gained steam in recent years, people are more aware of environmental issues and from that have developed a collective desire to find solutions. There is now a fair amount of competition in the eco-friendly products market. The quality of products – many of which are hand-made – is high and very often they are made in the U.S.A. There are lots of reasons to explore having a green Christmas.
