“Marty” director passes away

November 14, 2007 By Lorraine Marie

The film industry suffered another great loss this week as director Delbert Mann passed away at the age of 87.
Mann actually started in television and often partnered with producer Fred Coe in making dramas for television. But it was their decision to bring the teleplay Marty to the big screen in 1953 that cemented Mann’s reputation in tinseltown. The film, which starred Ernest Borgnine, won Best Picture at the Oscars and also won for Mann the Best Director award. His other movie credits included Bachelor Party, Separate Tables, Desire Under The Elms, The Dark at the Top of the Stairs, That Touch of Mink, and Kidnapped.
Mann’s passion and great eye was what made him a wonderful director. He will be sorely missed.
