Housing hunting comes with a long check list. For the most part, you can walk into a home and immediately know what it is you don’t like and what is is you see that has potential. When you’re aiming to remodel, your checklist might look a little different than somebody who wants a home to be move-in ready.
Different things work for different people, but all homes have the essentials. There must be enough bedrooms to accommodate the people, the same goes for bathrooms. There must be a kitchen, a living space, and last but not least, if it isn’t already on the essentials list for you when looking for a house, a non-negotiable should be a porch and/or a deck. Here’s why:
They’re Perfect For Watching Summer Storms
If you grew up reading classic novels in school or if you’re a fan of film, you’ll know just how much of an advantage it is to have a porch or a deck when those amazing summer storms roll in. Porches and decks allow you to have cover from the rain, but you aren’t inhibited from seeing the lightning or feeling the breeze as the storm brings scents of the earth your direction. It’s really quite magical. Without a deck or porch, you’re resigned to have to watch the storm from a less desirable place indoors where not only are the sounds of the storm muted, so is the entire experience.
They Allow You to Entertain Easier
In addition to being the perfect place to watch a summer storm, decks and porches are the perfect place to entertain large or small groups of people. It can be a drag to have people over and force them to all stay cooped up in a stuffy, indoor space. When you have a deck and a porch, it gives you more space to work with and allows people to get fresh air when they need it whilst still being part of the party.
They’re the Perfect Place to Start and End Your Day
Waking up and communing with nature, or sitting down and just letting the worries and stresses of the day roll off of you while you stare into the distance or watch the city skyline is the definition of perfection. A porch allows you to wake up slowly, read a book at your own leisure, enjoy the warmth of the sun, or work on your tan.
If you don’t have a house with a porch or a deck, you miss out on all of the amazing things they have to offer. These are the reasons porches and decks are non-negotiable in the house hunting process. They just bring too much to the equation.
