Great ways to help your child love sports

May 25, 2008 By Jim

With summer almost here our children will once again morph from being mere “tenants” of the home to “dwellers”. They’d be spending more time indoors than outdoors with nothing special to do. Well, that is until dad and mom realize that they need to make their children’s summer time worthwhile. Sure, give them about 2-3 weeks of “bum” time, their body clocks need this period. But don’t leave them at this state for a long time. Inactive minds are difficult to jumpstart when school season kicks back again.

This summer, try the wonderful world of sports! It’s a healthy culture, keeps them busy and is a great season to bring them to a different kind of environment. Here are several great ways to help your little ones “love” sports:

1. Follow your child’s lead – try to sense what sport interests them and try to see if your community has summer clinics for them. Are they taking interests in soccer? Basketball perhaps? Are they noticing how mom makes delicious cookies and would like to try out their own batch? Know what their interests are now and find a way to tap into it.

2. Get involved – show some interest in your child’s summer activity. Don’t just bring them to soccer practice, leave, and pick them up afterwards. Stay. Cheer. Give him/her good time by being there AND having a good time yourself!

3. Get the gear – don’t hold-off in getting them what they need for the great summer. Invest in good equipment (if you can) or make sure the clinic provides them for your child to learn from or enjoy.

C’mon, give what you wanted to have too. Remember you were once young and needed the attention your children now needs.
