Interracial love has been a topic that has garnered a lot of heat for centuries. Racism is as real an issue in today’s world as it was during the time of slavery. It might not be as prevalent and easy to see, but it manifests itself in many different ways and still has an effect on political, social, and environmental factors that majorly shape the world that we live in.
Racism is completely ridiculous. That much is certain. Obviously everybody doesn’t agree on that matter, but to take away people’s rights or to treat them differently because they’re from a particular people group is like saying that of all the different ants in the world, one species of that ant can be considered an ant at all because it’s bite hold fire. What are the characteristics of being an ant? What are the characteristics of being human? There are variations within a species and every variation holds a purpose in the the whole of the ecosystem.
In any case, at least there things being done to highlight the reality of this matter to the world. Art does this. Though all mediums will touch on this matter, film is especially good at conveying the issues of race in the world. Here are films that focus on interracial love, in particular:
Holes
Although Holes is predominantly a teenager, young adult geared movie, the story highlights the issue of race and love very prominently. The story focuses on a young man named Stanley Yelnats who is convicted of a crime he didn’t do because his family is cursed with bad luck from a prior generation’s downfall, and Stanley is sent to a camp to dig holes all day to “build character”.
What he doesn’t realize is that he’s looking for a lost treasure that a woman by the name of Kissing Kate Barely buried in the dried out lake bed a hundred years prior. Kissing Kate was tuned to a life of crime because the man she loved was murdered because he was black. Love doesn’t have a color, yet people are killed for it.
Save the Last Dance
Save the last Dance is a movie about a girl named Sara who wants to be a ballerina. Her dreamed are put on hold when her mom dies so she has to go and live with her father. She moves to a part of town that is predominantly black. She ends up falling in love with a black man named Derek, as the two share similar interests and help each other cope with the hardships of life. The film proves that love transcends all boundaries, especially that of color. Black and white love, latino and asian love, it’s all the same. It’s beautiful.
