The Hollywoor Reporter broke the news this morning that Robert Rodriguez (“Grindhouse”, “Once Upon a Time In Mexico”, “Spy Kids”) has signed on to direct a new “Barbarella” feature. This new movie will feature a completely original story, and will not be based on the 1968 sci-fi camp classic that starred Jane Fonda.
Barbarella is the story of a female mercenary whoventures across the universe of a distant future, undertaking missions that require physical fearlessness, ingenuity and sensuality. The character debuted in 1962 in a French graphic magazine written and illustrated by Jean-Claude Forest and was known for her many adventures, often involving sex or sexuality.
No word yet on who Rodriguez will cast in the film, but there is no doubt casting rumors will begin to surface soon. From Rodriguez’s regular stable of actors my personal pick is Rosario Dawson….but that’s just me 🙂
