Remembering Dixie Carter

March 9, 2023 By Marie F

Over the weekend, the world lost one of the most unique comedic actresses of our time, Dixie Carter, who was best known to audiences as Julia Sugarbaker on Designing Women. Sugarbaker’s sassy, brassy, suffer-no-fools attitude and Carter’s uncanny ability to deliver even the most mundane of lines with hilarious inflections made Julia a landmark character for women in television. (All four of the main female roles on Designing Women planted seeds for strong leading ladies on the small screen that everyone from the iconic Monica, Phoebe, and Rachel on Friends to the outrageous Sue Sylvester on Glee have reaped the benefits of.)

Reportedly, Carter died on Saturday morning at the age of 70 due to complications from endometrial cancer. She was married to actor Hal Holbrook, who had a recurring role on Women as Julia’s longtime boyfriend Reese Watson.

Julia Sugarbaker was a true original for television. In tribute to Dixie Carter’s work, here are a few of my favorite Julia scenes from the show. Everybody knows the “night the lights went out in Georgia scene” and several other iconic moments; represented here are a few of her most under-appreciated comedic gems from the show.
