Golden Globe Winners (Yawn)

March 10, 2023 By Marie F

So, yeah. The Golden Globes were on Sunday night. Then, before I could post the winners, I got sick with the puke-your-guts-out-and-stomp-them-into-the-ground flu. But after thinking about it a bit, I don’t really feel like me & thee missed out on all that much. I mean, Hollywood always makes a big to-do over the Golden Globes, like they carry this really huge caché. But seriously…

There are like ninety members of the Hollywood Foreign Press who vote on the Golden Globes. That’s all. Big whoop. Doesn’t that make the Golden Globes kind of pointless? I know, it’s a bigger deal for movies, where Globes winners are believed to be a semi-accurate predictor of Oscar winners, but I think that’s been kind of refuted in recent years, hasn’t it?

Anyway, that’s just my $.02. I’m sure if you care at all about the Globes, you already know that Glee was the big winner in the television categories, snagging Best Musical or Comedy Series, Best Supporting Actress (Jane Lynch), and Best Supporting Actor (Chris Colfer). Yeah, you already know that, right? So let’s just move on.

I think the biggest news of the night was that host Ricky Gervais was so acerbic with his hosting duties — skewering every sacred cow from Hugh Hefner to Scientology — that his performance generated quite a bit of controversy. For his part, Gervais has already declared that he won’t be back for a third go ’round at hosting. For our part, we can only lament that no one will be on hand anymore to keep the ultimate meaninglessness of the Globes in check.

Cable Leads the Golden Globe Nominations

March 10, 2023 By Marie F

Once again reinforcing the fact that cable television is where the quality is at, the 68th Annual Golden Globe Nominations were announced just minutes ago, and pay-cable networks HBO and Showtime were the over-achievers, although Fox’s Glee got the most love of any single show.

HBO leads the nominees with 12 nods, while Showtime follows at 8. CBS and Fox scored 6 each, while AMC earned 5 nominations. In cumulative series nods, Glee got 5, followed by 3 nominations each for 30 Rock, Boardwalk Empire, Dexter, The Good Wife, Mad Men, Modern Family, Pillars of the Earth, and Temple Grandin.

Some noteworthy bits: AMC’s buzz-heavy The Walking Dead scored a Best Drama nomination, but sadly nothing else; Steve Buscemi scored a Best Actor (Drama) nod for his leading role in Boardwalk Empire; Lea Michele (Best Actress), Matthew Morrison (Best Actor), Jane Lynch (Supporting Actress), and Chris Colfer (Supporting Actor) scored nominations in every acting category for Glee; and Julia Stiles nabbed a nomination for her guest turn on Dexter.

Selling the Superbowl

March 5, 2023 By Marie F

With the disaster that was People’s Choice and the Globes, people are looking forward to some really good TV — and we’re not talking about those reruns that the writer’s strike has doomed us to watch.

It’s time for the Superbowl.

It’s alwys the year’s biggest TV event, but now they’re planning to make it even better. Advertisers are going to bring in live shows, and have spent months planning the special campaigns they’ve made just for the Superbowl. TargetCast’s Farella said, “When you buy the Super Bowl or the Golden Globes or the Oscars you tend to prepare marketing programs around them. Nobody would ever buy them to put in a regular advertisement. You buy them to create a marketing event.”

After all, advertisers spend a stunning $3 million for every 30 seconds of airtime. Better make that 30 seconds worth it.

But advertisers feel the fee is worth it — last year, 93.15 million people watched the show. As of today, one 30 second spot hasn’t been booked.

So, are we canceling the Golden Globes?

March 5, 2023 By Marie F

The Writers Guild isn’t giving in to any requests to allow workers to join preparations for the Golden Globe Awards. So who’s going to write the jokes — Letterman?!

Even worse, they aren’t allowing flim clips from the nominated films to be shown. After all, one of the key issues in the strike is that HOllywood doesn’t compensate them when their work is reformatted in a new medium — e.g, websites, DVD’s, international academy awards.

Maybe the Golden Globes hosts will just have to reenact the scenes with sock puppets?
