LOST Fan Films New Episode

March 10, 2023 By Marie F

Lost geek and filmmaker Corey Vidal recently discovered that most of the on-location sets used by the show are still standing in Hawaii. So what was he to do but film this 6-minute fan film, called “The Man Who Brought Us Here,” that imagines how life continues on the island after the events of the show. I’ll put my spoiler-filled comments after the video.

Vidal certainly knows his Lost. The brief episode that accompanied the Season 6 DVD/Blu-ray, showing how Hurley and Ben ran things on the island, established that Hurley was very concerned with cleaning up after the messes that the Dharma Initiative made. So it’s entirely plausible that Hurley would start recruiting new scientists and whatnot, and bringing them to the island with the intent of trying to fix past mistakes and figure out just what the island is and how it works. I like that idea a lot.

It’s great to see some of the old sets again, and the film quality is high. With so much happening in such a short period of time, it’s easy to imagine that a lot of different things were going on on the island that we aren’t entirely privy to. The acting leaves room to be desired, and the writing felt like it was trying too hard to be intentionally ambiguous. Overall it’s pretty darn cool, and I applaud Mr. Vidal for his hardcore fandom!

The Most Pirated Shows of 2010

March 10, 2023 By Marie F

Lost has garnered one more accolade for its final season, though I’m not sure if this is one that it’s creators would relish.

According to TorrentFreak, people are still illegally downloading TV shows instead of watching them on live TV. In fact, two of 2010’s most-pirated shows — Heroes and Dexter — outnumbered their live Nielsen ratings.

Anyhoo, here’s the ten most pirated shows of 2010, followed by their approximate number of illegal downloads:

  1. Lost – 5,940,000
  2. Heroes – 5,480,000
  3. Dexter – 3,880,000
  4. The Big Bang Theory – 3,270,000
  5. House – 2,610,000
  6. How I Met Your Mother – 2,490,000
  7. 24 – 2,240,000
  8. True Blood – 1,920,000
  9. Glee – 1,700,000
  10. Family Guy – 1,620,000

Hurley’s Headed for Another Island

March 10, 2023 By Marie F

Jorge Garcia, aka Hurley from Lost, has been cast in a lead role in the new Fox series Alcatraz. Both Lost and Alcatraz were developed under J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions, and reportedly, this new role was written specifically for Garcia.

We also know now what the new show is about. Overseen by Lost writing alumni Elizabeth Sarnoff, Alcatraz tells the story of a group of Alcatraz prisoners and guards who went missing thirty years ago, when the prison was still open, and who reappear in the present day. The show follows an FBI team that tries to track down these returned individuals and piece together the mystery of their disppearance.

Garcia is set to play a “hippy geek” expert on Alcatraz named Dr. Diego Soto, who works with the FBI team.

Production on Alcatraz begins in January.

NBC Snags New JJ Abrams Show with ‘Lost’ Duo

March 10, 2023 By Marie F

Man, J.J. Abrams has been busy this pickup season. He’s already got pilot commitments for Alcatraz at Fox and Person of Interest at CBS, and now he’s got yet another new show in the works, this time for NBC.

When Lost, which was co-created by Abrams, ended earlier this year, co-stars Terry O’Quinn and Michael Emerson frequently joked that they’d love to find a new show that they could star in together. Their characters frequently shared screen time on Lost, chewing scenery and playing off one another like the master thespians they are. Both actors even scored multiple Best Supporting Actor nods at the Emmys — winning one each.

At least one person took their jokes seriously, and fortunately for fans, that someone had the power to do something about it. NBC has given a pilot order to Emerson and O’Quinn’s proposed show — although there was reportedly strong interest in the concept from both Fox and ABC (which aired Lost) — and J.J. Abrams is lending it the clout of his Bad Robot Productions. (It should make a good partner for Abrams’ other spy show on NBC, the just-starting Undercovers.) It was originally known as Odd Jobs, but apparently that title has been abandoned. What is known is that the show would feature the two actors as ex-Black-Ops agents (shades of Burn Notice?), which is a brilliant concept for these two actors.

Frequent Abrams collaborators Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec — both of whom worked on Alias — will write and oversee the show.

This has to be some of the coolest news I’ve reported in a long time. But does anybody else find it odd that every major broadcast network is airing Abrams shows, except for ABC, which had his first two major cult hits (Alias and Lost)? ABC literally launched Abrams’ uber-career, yet his new shows keep winding up elsewhere.

TCA Awards: Glee does it again

March 9, 2023 By Marie F

Following Glee‘s very long list of Emmy nominations — the most of any show this year — the freshman show walked away with top honors at the 2010 Television Critics Association Awards ceremony Saturday night. Glee scored wins for overall Program of the Year, Outstanding New Program, and Individual Achievement in Comedy for actress Jane Lynch. Glee was the only winning show to receive multiple awards.

Outstanding Comedy went to Modern Family, while Lost and Breaking Bad tied for Oustanding Drama. Individual Achievement in Drama (essentially, “Best Actor or Actress”) went to Julianna Margulies for her work on The Good Wife. Yo Gabba Gabba was for the second time in a row named Outstanding Youth Program, while Oustanding News & Information Program went to The Discovery Channel’s much-hyped Life miniseries.

HBO’s one and only win was for its Outstanding Miniseries, The Pacific. A pair of legacy awards were given to M*A*S*H and James Garner, for the influence both had on culture and small-screen entertainment.

The TCA Awards (in case you didn’t know) are voted on by the 200 members of the Television Critics Association. It’s considered the highest honor bestowed by television critics.
