M. Night Shyamalan’s The Happening has yet to be shown (it’s coming out on Friday the 13th), but his next project has already been earmarked… and it’s the unlikeliest type of movie you’d see him do.
Shyamalan is currently working on the live action adaptation of the hit cartoon Avatar: The Last Airbender. Speaking at the Licensing International Expo 2008, Shyamalan and Nickelodeon top brass officially announced the project, which will be officially called The Last Airbender (the Avatar was dropped to avoid confusion with James Cameron’s movie of the same name). He revealed that casting has begun for the movie and he even said that some of these new finds are going to be future stars. The film is slated to be shown in 2010.
Fans are quite excited about Shyamalan’s involvement. The general consensus is that he will do a great job adapting the cartoon to film. Shyamalan has also talked about the film before and what he intends to do and this has also met with fan approval.
Shyamalan’s The Happening nears
M Night Shyamalan’s new movie The Happening is getting a lot of buzz. Mainly, the buzz surrounds the possible plot points for the thriller. Already, many people are saying that this is going to have Shyamalan’s trademark plot twist — a device that has divided moviegoers into Night haters and fans. Haters say that it’s already a tired device that the director keeps using, in fact, all of his movies have plot twists.
The Happening is supposed to be Shyamalan’s “green movie”, a film with strong environmental themes. We’ll see what the possible plot twist is going to be — or if there is even one. In the meantime, here’s the very cool poster for the movie.
