Michael Bay takes a shot at TV

March 9, 2023 By Marie F

Hollywood’s reigning king of explosions, Michael Bay (director of Transformers, Armageddon, and The Rock, is taking on television for the very first time, with a competition/reality show called One Way Out. Bay is joining forces with Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz, who produce Project Runway and Top Chef, to create what’s being called “action-adventure” reality show.

The premise of One Way Out puts selected contestants in extreme and volatile environments, with no bare necessities on-hand, where they’ll try to keep hidden secrets from their pasts from their fellow contestants. Trust and betrayal are the name of the game, while every contestant must also go to extremes merely to survive. It all builds towards some kind of showdown where every secret is exposed and some kind of big twist takes place.

If that description sounds pretty vague, that’s because it is. Bay and his partners aren’t releasing exact details about the show just yet, preferring to keep things mostly secretive to build interest. The trio hasn’t yet found a network home for the show yet, but is shopping it around Hollywood as we speak.

Whatever. As long as explosions are involved, that’s all that really matters.

Top Chefs Meats Natalie

March 9, 2023 By Marie F

Top_Chef_Natalie_Portman_Padma_LakshmiThe last Top Chef episode just won the best “Halloween Top Chef Episode Title” in my book for sounding unpalatable, gross, and just plain wrong. Last episode was called “Meat Natalie” and while witty and apt being an episode where the contestants got to meet NataliePortman, who happened to be vegan, I don’t think anyone will disagree with me in feeling all eeewy about the title.

Anyway before I get stuck on a completely senseless discussion on episode title choices, here a very short recap of what went down during the “Meat Natalie” episode.

The contestants were asked to do their gourmet interpretations of TV dinners. They also had to make sure that their gourmet TV dinners were inspired by classic TV shows assigned to them. Kevin, who picked “The Sopranos” and did his version of meatballs, was declared the winner. His prize: His dish will be sold by Schwan’s frozen food line. Unless he gets royalties (and he should!), I would throw a tantrum if I were him.

For the elimination challenge the chefs got to take over Tom Colicchio’s restaurant in Vegas to cook for food lover, vegetarian Natalie Portman. Kevin won the challenge (again) and this time got a much much better prize – a whole slew of appliances from GE. Kevin said “Ok” and seemed not to care for his prize that much, so I guess he liked his frozen dinner prize better. Weird!

As for the bottom three, Robin, Jennifer and Michael I all deserved to be there but like most everyone else, I am miffed that Robin wasn’t the one to go home. So there, expect to see Robin (who hasn’t stuffed a squash blossom her whole life) to still be in the next episode to underwhelm us all.

Top Chef Episode 6 Recap

March 8, 2023 By Marie F

top chef-thumbTop Chef is at the point when the heat is starting to get a bit too much leaving the “unlikables” extremely disliked by their peers/competitors. This year most competitors are not really that likable but they at least all have the same thing in common – they think Robin should go home. Granted that Robin has been irritating (to say the least), especially after last night’s show of lack of drive, I still think it’s more of a case of pointing fingers and/or snooty attitudes. Still I also think that had she not won the Quickfire challenge she might have been the one sent home.

Last night started off already drama-filled with some contestants donning red neckerchiefs in support of Mattin, who was sent home instead of Robin. Robin proved them wrong in the no-talent division by winning the Quickfire challenge and getting immunity with her “angel and devil” personality dish – arugula salad-cardamom apple ginger crisp combo. Everyone seems to think that her cancer story won her some points but hello I didn’t taste it but it sure looked good enough to win.

For the elimination challenge the contestants were asked to deconstruct some classic dishes. The big winner was Kevin who redeemed himself with his chicken mole. Something he wanted to do after his miserable duck mole. The bottom three included Ash (Shepherd’s pie), Laurine (fish and chips), and Ron (paella). Lucky for Robin she had immunity because for sure she would have been on the bottom three with her “repulsive” clam chowder. Ron went home for his paella for having poorly cooked rice and not being able to deconstruct the dish properly.

Sarah Jessica shows how Art mimics Reality (TV)

March 5, 2023 By Marie F

Sarah Jessica Parker’s back on TV — with a reality show 9still untitled) for visual artists. Her production company, Pretty Matches, will be working with Magical Elves, who make Project Runway and Top Chef.

Basically 12 aspiring artists will compete for the chance to display their work in a gallery, win cash, and go on a national tour.

Quips Caris Davis, “Van Gogh would probably have given his ear to be on it.”
