Taking place between the events of Snake-Eyes: Declassified and the first issue of the original G.I. Joe comic produced by Marvel, this miniseries tells the origin of the G.I. Joe team-itself. Written by good ole Larry Hama, this is old school G.I. Joe action that employs a greater focus on the military aspect rather than the Ninja or sci-fi portions of the mythos many writers seem to over-emphasis. This mini not only sets up the many years of Joe history we already know, but gives us a closer look at all the first year Joes that fell out of the spotlight shortly after their introduction. It’s like giving them a second chance. Cobra is only hinted at in this first issue, so don’t be expecting any major Joe vs. Cobra action right off the bat. Hama appears to be setting up their origin as well (which was partially covered in the Snake-Eyes: Declassified mini). Declassified #1 also appears to focus on a currently controversial military topic; torture. While it’s not so much “in your face†social commentary, it does cover the morality choices which might lead an officer to torture a prisoner. This is a promising start to the series but will most likely only appeal to the hardcore Joe fans, as most of the more popular characters are nowhere to be found.
