Teach Your Child CPR
Do you know how to administer CPR in case of an emergency? I have to be honest and admit that I do know all about CPR and how to do it in theory. I learned this early in life when I was in the Girl Scouts. However, I would have to say that I am not quite sure that I could administer CPR if I had to do it.
But have you ever thought about teaching your child how to administer this life saving technique? Indeed, perhaps not many parents have thought about this. According to a research conducted by some Austrian researchers, children as young as 9 years old can learn how to administer CPR.
The researchers that conducted this study focused on 147 children. The children were trained for 6 hours on life support techniques. Four months later, a follow up session was held, wherein the children were tested on the techniques they learned and 86 percent of them were able to do CPR correctly!
Naturally, the strength of the children may pose some limitations, especially in regard to the depth of the compression and the ventilation volumes. However, the fact remains that children do retain the necessary skills to do CPR.
What does this mean for us? While we normally would want to shield our children from the negative things in this world, it simply makes practical sense to have them trained in CPR. After all, you never know when this skill may come in handy.
Teach Your Child How To Read Well
I believe that reading is at the root of learning. Children who learn to read at an early age and continue to do so as they grow older have a big advantage over those who do not pick up books on a regular basis. Reading opens up worlds that may otherwise be closed to your child. Reading hones their minds more than watching TV and playing games can. As early as you can, help your child learn how to read and how to read well. How can you do this? Why not try these simple tips?
Give him/her the right kinds of books.
There are so many books out there but not all of them will helpful to your child. The idea is to buy the books which have words that are not too hard for your child – he/she should recognize at least 90 percent of the words in the book. At the same time, the book’s story or topic should be interesting for your child. Otherwise, it will just be too difficult or too boring, making reading more of a task than a pleasure.
Have your child read aloud.
Different people have different learning styles. You are lucky if your child learns best by seeing the letters and words. For some children, however, they learn best if they hear ideas. In order to make reading easier for these kinds of learners, have your child read aloud. Alternatively, take turns in reading aloud and have fun while at it.
Talk about the books.
After your child reads a story or a book, engage him/her in a discussion about it. Ask him/her comprehension questions that will help him/her remember the details. Ask him/her questions that will relate the story to his/her own experiences. Ask him/her hypothetical questions that would help him explore his imaginative side.
Your child can learn to read well and learn to love reading too. You just need to take an active role and show him/her yourself.
Last Minute Father’s Day Shopping
It’s Friday and the weekend is here! Many people I know spend their weekends shopping, but this weekend is not just any other weekend – it is Father’s Day weekend! Have you gotten a gift for your dad yet? If not, here are some quick ideas for last minute Father’s Day shopping.
Naturally, you have to take your dad’s interests into consideration. If he is a techie, then you are in luck. There are countless things that you can get your dad. If you have a rather hefty budget, then go for gadgets such as an iPod, an iPhone, a netbook, or any other similar toy. If you are on a shoe string, you can still find nifty little gadgets in the market. Go to the mall (offline or online!) and look for handy devices such as unique-looking flash disks. Another thing that comes to mind is a card reader that can take in multiple kinds of cards. You can also look at USB hubs of all sorts of shapes and sizes.
Now if your dad is not the kind who would appreciate such gifts, why not visit the local bookstore and see what you can find? Better yet, go online and check auction sites such as eBay OR look at the online store of your favorite bookstore. The chances are that you can find last minute sales especially geared towards Father’s Day.
You know what I think will work for some? Do something different and get your dad a gift certificate for a spa or massage treatment. While moms are usually the ones who tend to like this kind of thing, there are many services geared towards men now, like sports massages. You never know, you just might introduce your dad to a new pleasure in life!
