Running On Empty

These days, that is how I feel. Eric Clapton’s song “Running on Faith” keeps playing in my head, but it seems more like “running on empty” for me. For sure, I am not the only person in this situation. In this fast paced world we live in, burn out is a common thing, and stress even more so. So how do you manage when you’re in this situation? Here are some tips that will help you run on empty.

Don’t deviate from routine. As boring as it may sound, this will help you get through your days till you have the time to sit back and unwind. Following routine imposes order into your life, and when you’re out of fuel, this order might be the thing that will save you.

Don’t keep everything to yourself. I am – was – so guilty of this. I hate telling other people what I am really going through. Then I found friends who will listen no matter what, and not judge no matter what. Spilling your guts help. It really does.

Feed yourself. It’s common sense. You are already exhausted – you can’t starve yourself, too! Try eating every four hours. Avoid high sugar food, though, as you’ll experience a crash like nothing else.

As much as possible, avoid medication. Yeah, they work and keep you awake BUT they also have side effects. You get jumpy and jittery, and you won’t be able to focus. Try moving instead – exercise a bit to get that blood flowing.

Last, when you get the chance, hit the sack. Nothing beats a good night’s sleep.
